Random Words of Wisdom
I don't know much and I am still learning but here are some random tips and resources to help you win at life and/or graduate school. This is an ongoing list and will be updated whenever I learn new things (which is every day).
Find a Therapist ASAP
The process of finding one is definitely a challenge. You can't find the right one in your network, they don't take your insurance, the person creeps you out, the list goes on. I went through four therapists in a span of two years and really wanted to give up on the process. However, I am so glad I did not. I found the right one on the 5th try. Don't give up - your mind, body, and spirit will thank you. Find free/low-cost mental health services here.
Fellowship Opportunities
Dr. Carmen Falcone and I put together a list of funding opportunities for international students. It is open-source so feel free to add international fellowships and grants to help each other out!
Invest in a Hard Drive & Cloud Storage
Yes, you should have both. The hard drive is good to store data but life happens and sometimes you just don't have the time to back up all the work you've done. What happens if your laptop peaces out and all of your work is lost forever? The cloud storage syncs with your laptop and/or computer so you don't have to worry about tech failure. Have a back up for your back up :)
Helpful Things to Have During Grad School
Instant pot (saves a lot of time), comfy shoes (I invested in Allbirds and Rothys since they are washable and extremely comfortable), a good pillow (your decaying body will thank you), chair massager (it will take out the kinks from sitting so much), cycling machine (can be found on Amazon for $300, worth it for incorporating daily exercise during winter), a second monitor (it's a game-changer), Zotero (free reference manager), Rayyan (free systematic review program).
Breathe Correctly - Because You Are Most Likely Doing It Wrong
Wow, what bold assumptions. Are you a mouth breather? I sometimes catch myself having a breathe-off with Darth Varder. Apparently, it's really important to inhale through your nose and exhale out of your mouth. Obviously to live, but also it affects your physical and mental health as well. I am doing a poor job at explaining the complexities so please read "Breath" by James Nestor, who describes this in great detail. I highly recommend!
